(2003) Landscape Mysteries: The Tower People of Shetland / The Abandoned Marsh
From the makers of Coast, Landscape Mysteries embarks on a series of
journeys in which Professor Aubrey Manning tries to solve mysteries
hidden in the landscape of the British Isles. Unpicking clues in the
geology, natural history and archaeology, Aubrey reveals how the land
has come to look the way it does. The Tower People of Shetland On the
far edge of Europe, a long, long time ago, a series of monumental stone
towers, known as Brochs, once dominated the landscape. The Tower People
of Shetland sees Aubrey travel to Shetland, the most northerly territory
in the British Isles, in a search for clues to the identity of the
ancient people who once lived in the mysterious Broch Towers. The
Abandoned Marsh A trip to the bleak Romney Marsh is next for Aubrey
where he searches for clues to a haunting and empty landscape in which
humans once thrived and then mysteriously deserted. Now, only church
ruins and tales of days gone by remain as Aubrey endeavours to find out
what became of these lost communities in The Abandoned Marsh. The
landscape around us is part of our life; it affects so much that we do
and feel. Amazing forces have acted to shape our landscapes; they began
millions of years back and continue to this day. Join me in a search for
clues which reveal their influences on our past, present and future.
